The day is devoted to the fascinating world of mathematics: do things you never thought possible and think about mathematical things from completely different angles - lots more jokes like these on the day!

Play with numbers, achieve amazing things and take home lots of ideas and things you've made. Develop a deep love of numbers and of all things mathematical by having a go at exciting open-ended challenges, investigations and philosophical thinking.

You will measure the speed of sound and calculate the height of tress just by looking at them. Look at the fascinating history of the number system and learn how to multiply using the fascinating Egyptian, Russian and Italian methods. We will measure and calculate the value of Pi (π) then write a poem in the sequence of Pi! We will answer Fermi's impossible questions and meet the fabulous Number Devil who is so inspirational!

We will have a go at the Four Fours Challenge where you will able to go way beyond +, -, x and ÷ and learn all about √, X0, ! , ∞ and many other symbols that you never knew existed - but are great fun to play with. All this will keep you entertained with Maths for life!

Masterclass leader: Marcelo Staricoff

Bio: Marcelo started his career as a research scientist and then became a Primary School Headteacher. Marcelo specialises in equipping children with a lifelong love of learning and with all they need to develop as philosophical, creative and critical thinkers from a very young age. He was a member of SAPERE’s National Committee, the Charity that promotes Philosophy for Children and whilst a Gifted and Talented adviser he formed part of the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth Think Tank helping to shape national policy. He is the author of the book ‘Start Thinking’ and is the founder and creator of the philosophy of education which has now become known as ‘The Joy of Not Knowing (JONK)’. Marcelo is currently working with lots of schools and writing lots of books!
