Mazes can be complex mathematical puzzles or real constructions from bricks or hedges. Some are world famous such as the one at Hampton Court that leaves tourists bewildered and sometimes so lost that they have to be rescued.
Altrincham town planners have decided they want a maze and have commissioned you to design one. To get down to the job, you first do some research by examining some mazes, along with a host of intriguing mathematical puzzles. Then working in teams - and with the use of rulers, hacksaws and glue guns - you will construct your own wooden maze. To add to the fun, you might challenge the other teams to find their way out.

Bio: David formed a charity (now called The Greater Manchester STEM Centre) over 20 years ago to promote interest in science and technology to young people and their families. This organisation operates a number of schemes on behalf of national bodies – such as The British Science Association and The Nuffield Foundation as well as tried and tested hands-on series of activities which are forming the basis of these weekend sessions. Dr Ward has held senior school science posts in schools in Salford and Trafford followed by Curriculum Adviser/Inspector posts in Salford and Bury LEAs. His interest in teaching and learning techniques has led to membership of numerous national committees for the Association for Science Education and for many years as its representative on the Royal Society’s Education Committee. David enjoys leading sessions for Tomorrow’s Achievers as it enables him to offer intellectual challenges to young people outside of the ‘constraints’ of the ‘National Curriculum’.
